Market commentary

India

Polypropylene rose again on 17 August as OPaL, IOCL and MRPL each lifted offers — around ₹2/kg on homopolymer, ₹4/kg on film and lamination grades and up to ₹6/kg on random copolymer. HDPE and LLDPE were held flat in the same round, so converters running both chains face diverging input costs. PVC is steady near ₹98,000–1,10,000/MT. With the rupee near 95.8 and Brent near $91.6/bbl, import parity is the dominant influence.

China

PP futures near 8,680 CNY/T are up roughly 4% on the month and 24% year on year, while PE at about 7,833 CNY/T has drifted marginally lower — a widening split between the two chains. PVC has firmed to around 4,610 RMB/MT on construction demand. S&P Global flags rising supply pressure in the propylene chain through the rest of the year.

Europe

The story this quarter is the inversion of the recycled premium: rPET flakes at roughly €1,331–1,341/t sit about €300/t below virgin PET, the first sustained discount in two years, caused by virgin strength rather than recyclate weakness. Virgin tightness traces back to disrupted PE, PP, crude and naphtha flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Recycled demand outside mandated grades remains flat.

North America

Feedstock economics still favour the ethylene chain — propylene near 42 cents/lb against ethylene near 25 cents/lb — leaving polyethylene producers better placed than polypropylene compounders. Packaging demand is steady; durable goods and automotive remain soft.

Middle East

Producers retain a feedstock cost advantage, but routing risk is now the binding constraint: disrupted Hormuz transit for PE, PP, crude and naphtha has tightened global availability and lifted costs well beyond the region. Export offers stay competitive into Asia and Africa where cargoes can move.
